An endodontist is a dentist that specializes in root canal treatment. Root canal treatment is a procedure that removes infected or damaged pulp tissue inside the tooth. The pulp is the tooth’s nervous system with branches that go down the roots of the tooth.
The pulp can become infected or inflamed by a variety of causes: deep decay, a cracked or chipped tooth, repeated dental procedures, or trauma. Signs of pulp damage include pain, prolonged sensitivity to heat or cold, discoloration of the tooth and swelling and tenderness in the nearby gums. Sometimes, there are no symptoms.
Our doctors will provide you with local anesthetics that will make the procedure comfortable. For the first few days after treatment, your tooth may feel sensitive, especially if there was pain or infection before the procedure.
The endodontist removes the damaged pulp, carefully cleans and shapes the inside of the tooth, then fills and seals the space so bacteria cannot seep in this area. After root canal treatment is completed you will return to your dentist, who will place a crown or other restoration to restore it to full function. After the restoration is done the tooth continues to function like any other tooth.
